Both a symbol of the Mubarak government’s power and a component in its construction of national identity, football served as fertile ground for Egyptians to confront the regime’s overthrow during the 2011 revolution. With the help of the state, appreciation for football in Egypt peaked in the late 2000s. Yet after Mubarak fell, fans questioned their previous support, calling for a reformed football for a new, postrevolutionary nation.
In Egypt’s Football Revolution, Carl Rommel examines the politics of football as a space for ordinary Egyptians and state forces to negotiate a masculine Egyptian chauvinism. Basing his discussion on several years of fieldwork with fans, players, journalists, and coaches, he investigates the increasing attention paid to football during the Mubarak era; its demise with the 2011 uprisings and 2012 Port Said massacre, which left seventy-two fans dead; and its recent rehabilitation. Cairo’s highly organized and dedicated Ultras fans became a key revolutionary force through their antiregime activism, challenging earlier styles of fandom and making visible entrenched ties between sport and politics. As the appeal of football burst, alternative conceptions of masculinity, emotion, and politics came to the fore to demand or prevent revolution and reform.
Dr Carl Rommel is a Researcher at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at Uppsala University and an Affiliated Researcher at CEDEJ. His anthropological research in Egypt focuses on masculinity, emotions, future-making, sports, revolution, and ‘projects’. Rommel earned his PhD from SOAS, University of London in 2015. He has published articles in Men & Masculinity, Critical African Studies, Middle East – Topics & Arguments and Soccer & Society. Egypt’s Football Revolution is his first book.

كرمز دَلّل على سلطة حكومة مبارك، وكمكوّن اعتمدت عليه تلك الحكومة في إنشاء الهوية الوطنية، أدت كرة القدم وظيفتها كحقل خصب واجه عبره المصريون نظام مبارك حتى إسقاطه في ثورة 2011. أسهمت الدولة في نشر الاهتمام بكرة القدم، إلى أن بلغ الاهتمام بكرة القدم ذروته في أواخر العقد الأول من الألفينات. ولكن ما إن سقط مبارك حتى بدأ مشجعو الكرة يسائلون ولاءاتهم السابقة، ويطالبون بكرة قدم جديدة لمصر ما بعد الثورة.
في كتابه “ثورة مصر الكروية،” يحلل كارل رومِل الأبعاد السياسية لكرة القدم كفضاء للتفاوض والتلاقي بين عموم المصريين وقوى الدولة على إنشاء تصور لعصبية وطنية ذكورية. يقيم المؤلف دراسته على سنوات من البحث الميداني، التقى خلالها بمشجعين، ولاعبين وصحافيين ومدربين. ويوجه نظرة متمحصة للاهتمام المتزايد الذي نالته كرة القدم خلال الحقبة المباركية، ثم تهاويها بعد انتفاضات 2011 ومذبحة بورسعيد، والتي أودت بأرواح 72 مشجعا، ثم محاولات إعادة تأهيلها مؤخرا. وكان مشجعو الألتراس من القاهرة، وامتازوا بتنظيمهم العالي وتفانيهم، كانوا قوة ثورية محورية عبر أنشطتهم المعادية للنظام، وهو ما كان مفارقة للأنماط السائدة قبل ذلك وتحديا لها، ثم إنه أبرز العلاقات الراسخة بين الرياضة والسياسة. وإذ تعالت جاذبية كرة القدم، طفت للسطح أيضا مفاهيم بديلة للذكورية والعاطفة والسياسة، تدفع باتجاه الثورة والإصلاح أو تسعى لمنعهما.
نبذة عن المؤلف
كارل رومِل باحث في قسم الأنثروبولوجيا الثقافية والإثنولوجيا بجامعة أوبسالا، وباحث منتسب لدى “مركز الدراسات والوثائق الاقتصادية والقانونية والاجتماعية” (CEDEJ). أبحاثه الأنثروبولوجية في مصر تركزت على الذكورية، والعاطفة، وإنشاء تصورات المستقبل، والرياضة، والثورة، و”المشروعات.” حصل رومل على شهادة الدكتورة من سواز (SOAS) بجامعة لندن في 2015. ونشرت مقالاته البحثية في دوريتي “Men & Masculinity”، و Critical African Studies, Middle East – Topics & Arguments and Soccer & Society. “ثورة مصر الكروية” هو كتابه الأول.
