Summary:

Tourism has grown into a global industry, often seen as an economic solution for regional development and employment. But the spread of mass tourism to fragile environments raises many issues around land and water preservation, landscape management and respect of local and indigenous populations. There have been many attempts since the late 20th century to promote alternative forms of tourism that respect local diversity while offering sustainable incomes and environments. How can a country like Egypt avoid the exploitation of sensitive resources for the benefit of international capital? Is it possible to find an equilibrium between social, economic and environmental pressures? And can tourism be reconciled with equality and local empowerment? These and other questions will be addressed in our panel of speakers, leaders of sustainable projects, tourism experts and academics.

  • Soha Bahgat: Assistant professor in Tourism studies,Actual minister of tourism and antiquities adviser for training and capacity building.
    Spoke person to the ministry.
    Board Member of the GVET committee for tvet education. Member of National committee of UNESCO.
  • Mohammed Elrazzaz (Cairo, 1976) is a Barcelona-based staff member of the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) since 2013. Part of the Economic Development and Employment Division at the Secretariat, he is in charge of Creative Economy, Digital Economy and Social Economy.
    In parallel, he is Professor of Mediterranean Heritage at the International University of Catalonia in Barcelona (UIC) since 2015. His second book, titled “The Mediterranean: A Shared Heritage”, was published by the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI, Slovenia) in 2018.
  • Sandrine Gamblin is currently working as a tourism consultant on the EU-funded project “Visit Badrashin!” (www.visitbadrashin.com), dedicated to rural development, responsible tourism and inclusive economic growth. As an academic, she extensively taught and researched in the region, and headed the Middle East Studies Center at AUC (2015-2017). She did her Phd on International tourism in Egypt with a special focus on heritage management and local development in the region of Louxor (Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris).
  • Hashim Morsy
    Egyptian birder and eco activist.
    He joined the Migratory Soaring Birds Project (MSB) and the Illegal Bird Hunting as a bird researcher . Also the bird monitoring programm at the red sea coast.
    Active in sea turtle rescue in Port Said and crocodiles in Aswan. He is the founder of Heissa Camp Ecolodge and Azaaola.

  • Simone Abram
    Professor of Anthropology at Durham University (UK). Her books include ’Tourists and Tourism’ (1997) and ‘Green Ice: Tourism ecologies in the European High North’ (2016).
    She has authored or edited 10 books, and over 60 journal articles and book chapters.
  • Waleed Mansour
    Program Manager-Climate and Energy, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Egypt Office.
