‘Reproducing Europe: Migrant Parenting and Contested Citizenship’ is a five-year research project financed by the European Research Council (2015-2020) and led by Dr Anouk de Koning. The project examines how everyday citizenship is debated, produced and negotiated in a Europe where migrants are increasingly seen as a burden or threat. It examines these negotiations of citizenship through a study of debates, interventions and practices related to migrant parenting in Paris, Milan and Amsterdam. The experiences of Egyptian migrant parents – a relatively new North African and (partly) Muslim migrant group – serve as its vantage point.
The research will be carried out by a project team consisting of six researchers who will work in these three cities. It relies on close cooperation between the various researchers. The team will work together to further elaborate and refine the research approach and the various subprojects and will also co-author a number of publications.
